2yo Colt Jericho Produces Second Trial Win
Promising two-year-old colt Jericho (Smart Missile ex Advance To Go) produced his second trial win from as many trial efforts this morning at Rosehill Gardens when sent out over 900m with Winona Costin in the saddle.
Following the jump, Jericho settled second last on the rail where he travelled comfortably in the early stages of the trial. When rounding for home, Winona asked for a fraction more from the youngster who responded, albeit greenly, to finish with a good turn of foot and edge out the leader (and stablemate) Windcatcher in the final 40m to win by 1.3 lengths. Having won his first trial as a leader in October, we were pleased to see Jericho sit comfortably amongst horses and win in a different style showing that he has versatility in the way he can be ridden/adapt to the different ways that races can pan out.
Should all remain well with Jericho over the coming 10 days he will head to his first race start, the Golden Gift over 1100m at Rosehill Gardens on the 21st of November, a race worth $150,000 in prizemoney which will prove valuable should we aim to get a run in the Golden Slipper.
Jericho is from the first crop of youngsters by Group 2 Todman Stakes and Listed Breeder’s Plate winning sire Smart Missile who has been a popular sire with both breeders and last season’s yearling buyers. From the female family of Group 1 Queensland Oaks Winner Joie Denise, Jericho was the first horse purchased by Triple Crown Syndications at this year’s Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale.
We had another promising trial this morning from three-year-old gelding Steyne (Snitzel ex Easy To Read) who made up part of the 10-horse-strong, final trial of the day. Having jumped smartly from the inside barrier, also with Winona Costin riding, Steyne covered ground well to finish fourth beaten around 2.6 lengths. Steyne (pictured below) is a horse that looks like he’ll be most comfortable and effective racing over 1600m+. That being said, we are looking forward to getting his second race preparation under way to test him over some suitable distances.
