Outstanding Charlie in 10000

The hugely talented Charlie Boy showed his class on Saturday when running an outstanding race to finish 3rd in the Group 1 Doomben 10000.

The Brisbane weight For Age feature race has been on the agenda for the son of Myboycharlie since he ran 2nd (by a pimple to Boban) in the same race last year. The 2016 edition saw him ridden by Queensland’s top jockey Damian Browne. Charlie Boy jumped away cleanly from the barriers and was able to take up a nice spot two thirds of the way back in the field after Two Blue, Fell Swoop and Hooked set out at break neck speed. Damian showed his class in letting Charlie Boy settle back where he was comfortable rather than trying to push up to keep in touch with the speed of the race.

Once in the straight Charlie Boy delivered his outstanding turn-of-foot to surge up through the field before having to redirect his line back to the inside when needing to get around the tiring Fell Swoop. Given the tiny margins this small change in direction no doubt cost him the 2nd placing for two successive years.

The Group 1 placing took Charlie Boy’s career earnings to over $812,000 in what has been a magnificent career to date with plenty more in store – starting with Saturday week’s $1,500,000 Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm – the Grand Final for this preparation.

Triple Crown Syndication’s stablemate Dothraki was also a notable performer in the same Group 1 feature event finishing in 5th position after being forced to do all the work and cart the rest of the field up to the tearaway leaders. Dothraki took his career earnings to just a tick under $1,000,000 for his lucky owners. Dothraki will head to the paddock now for a well earned rest after a magnificent racing preparation which saw him run an exceptional (and agonisingly close) 2nd in the Group 1 BTC Cup.

Peter and Paul Snowden deserve a lot of credit for the manner in how they have turned both Charlie Boy and Dothraki out for these big assignments. It gives the whole team so much confidence that they will perform at the very best when it counts when under Peter and Paul’s care.
