Smartedge a cut above as Triple Crown strike again
SMARTEDGE kept the wheels rolling on Triple Crown’s run of sensational form, winning the final race of the midweek metro season in the BenchMark 77 Handicap over 1200m at Canterbury on Wednesday.
Excellent performances in defeat when racing in metro Saturday grade saw Smartedge as the standout selection on the final race of the card, yet the three-year-old by Smart Missile overcame a leaders’ bias to land the spoils under a superb ride by red hot jock Blake Shinn.
Smartedge’s win marks eight individual winners in the last three weeks for Triple Crown, who are ending the season with a flying run of form.
Dropping back to the rear of the field, Shinn elected to take the shortest route home up the fence with horses running wide faring poorly on the day, and that decision proved critical, with Smartedge exploiting a gap in the straight to rattle home for his third career win.
Shinn, who took the jockeys’ challenge, said it was a deserved win for the horse.
“He’s been the model of consistency all preparation,” said Shinn. “Thankfully everything went his way today as obviously he was back in grade today to midweek company.
“He did a good job. The track had been against backmarkers all day and that’s his racing pattern and how he needs to be ridden, but his class prevailed today.
“I was scratching my head as to how I was going to get him home. Fortunately things went my way today and things are happening for me at the moment and we’re going well.”
