Smartedge impresses with flying trial finish
TRIPLE CROWN’s Smartedge caught the eye at Randwick’s trials on Tuesday morning with a surging late show under Corey Brown.
The son of Smart Missile showed flashes of ability in his first trial, where he finished fifth when not given a hard time by Tuesday’s same jockey, and, having travelled smoothly behind the leading trio on this occasion, Corey Brown asked the question of Smartedge entering the straight.
With all of six lengths to make up on the leaders, Smartedge was cajoled into giving chase before effortlessly lengthening to finish an impressive third in the 740m clip, 1.7 lengths behind Spencer, who was having his second trial after contesting the valuable Breeders’ Plate at Randwick in October.
Having gathered an education, Smartedge will be given time in the paddock to develop before reentering the Snowden stables in preparation for his debut run.
Yet Smartedge was not the only son of Smart Missile to make an impression on Tuesday, as the Bjorn Baker-trained Magic Missile won his second successive trial.
Smartedge follows Jericho, a fellow son of Smart Missile and Listed runner-up, in racing for Triple Crown, with the gelding out of Couredge showing similar levels of ability.
Smart Missile has made a flying start to his life at stud, having already sired a Stakes winner in Smart ‘N’ Sassy, and is on an upward trajectory to the top, posting similar numbers to leading Australian sire Snitzel at the same point in their stud careers.
Shares available in two Smart Missile fillies
Triple Crown recognize considerable talent in the emphatic Todman Stakes winner and have invested in two fillies by the boom son of Fastnet Rock from the recent sales, who are showing encouraging levels of talent and temperament.
Purchased from the Inglis Classic Sale in Sydney, they don’t come better bred than a beautiful filly from the extensive family of Group 1 winners Malaguerra, Snitzerland and Mirror Mirror, with filly to be trained by 2016 Golden Slipper-winning trainers Peter & Paul Snowden.
Our other Smart Missile filly to be trained by the emerging talent of Bjorn Baker, is an impressive filly bred on the same Smart Missile/More Than Ready cross as Group 3 Caulfield Stakes runner-up Rocketeer.
