Triple Crown in the zone after double delight
SOME terrific performances over the weekend from the Triple Crown string saw the team come away with a fine double at Newcastle as two-year-old Military Zone and flying mare Classic Thoughts scored victories.
On only his second racecourse start, Military Zone tracked the leader and powered his way to the lead at the two-furlong mark, holding off the attentions of stablemate Lions Head by a length to delight his enthusiastic set of owners!
And on the penultimate race on the card, four-year-old mare Classic Thoughts came with a searching run on the outside to swoop the field after settling at the rear, to claim a sensational double for Triple Crown and their owners, Snowden Racing and jockey Adrian Layt.
A horse to keep an eye on as he progresses, Military Zone has impressed in his recent work and made light work of the older horses to win this Maiden Handicap over 1200m with an air of authority.
Co-trainer Peter Snowden “A great result and a super run,” said Snowden. “To be able to do what he did suggests he has good ability.
“Once he got cover he relaxed really well and he sprinted hard the last furlong and a half. It was a great effort and he’ll improve for that run as he gains in fitness.”
By the Snowden-trained dual Group 1 winner Epaulette, Military Zone is from the family of dual Group 1 winning star Toorak Toff, and was a $140,000 purchase from the Three Bridges draft at the Inglis Premier sale.
Classic Thoughts has shown significant improvement in her last preparations, getting off the mark at Newcastle over 1850m last time in, and this victory over an inadequate trip of 1400m in the Class 1 Handicap suggests she’s on track for an excellent preparation as she goes over further ground.
“A very good effort today,” said Peter Snowden. “We’d have been disappointed to have been beaten as she got blocked at the furlong and then produced a great effort once she got into running.
“She hit the line really well and based on that she could well be in for a good preparation as she gets steps up in trip and gets that fitness into her.”
Adrian Layt was in the saddle for both rides, and he took to Twitter to express his delight and scoring a double for the Triple Crown team.
Wrapped to grab a couple of winners today @newcastleraces_ for @TripleCrownSynd and @SnowdenRacing1 Military Zone 2yr old beating the older horses and little Classic Thoughts tried hard coming from last off a slow run race savaging the line. Great effort from both horses.
