Baker bags Canterbury treble as Songlike impresses
BJORN BAKER has begun the season as he ended the last and landed a fine treble with his only three runners at Canterbury Racecourse on a blustery Wednesday afternoon.
After collecting 38 NSW Metro wins last season, an increase of 13 from the previous campaign, Baker has four to his name already in 2017/18, leaving him joint top of the Premiership at this early stage.
Three-year-old filly Songlike struck the right chord in Race 1, with a comfortable all-the-way success over 1100m. Having entered the race off the back of two runner-up performances behind a pair of smart rivals sporting the blue of Godolphin, she made no mistake here, drawing clear under Tim Clark to win by a length from $1 million colt Showtime.
The filly by Your Song showed greenness when contesting the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes on debut in February, but caught the eye in two trial performances before taking to the racetrack this preparation.
“She’s going the right way,” Baker said. “I’ve got a good opinion of her. I’ve just got to think where we go from here.
“We may even look after her and give her a bit of time. We’ll just see how she comes through first.
“I’m sure some of the horses behind her will go onto better things as well.
“She’s always been a nice filly, it’s nice to see her win a city race.”
Jockey Tim Clark was impressed by the manner of her victory.
“She puts herself in the right spot and was able to control it, which is probably not that easy to do today running in to the wind, so it adds more merit to the win,” Clark said.
“There were horses sitting back with cover getting softer runs but she had the fitness on her side and we utilised that and quickened up before the turn and she did a job to hold on.
“I think next time she’ll be even better when she strengthens up a bit more. She’s going to fill out a bit more but she’s a filly with good promise and I’m sure Bjorn will place her to advantage.”
