Charlie Boy gets chance to correct Heffernan record
By Adrian Dunn
Third time lucky?
Well, that’s what Gerald Ryan and Triple Crown Syndications hope when Charlie Boy contests the Kevin Heffernan Stakes at Sportingbet Park on Saturday.
Hot Snitzel ran second in the Group 3 race the past two years for Ryan and Triple Crown Syndications.
Two years ago Hot Snitzel was runner-up behind Mid Summer Music, beaten a long head, then last year the gelding bumped into Lankan Rupee.
Ryan believes this year’s renewal of Kevin Heffernan Stakes is well within the grasp of Charlie Boy, which ran into trouble when fourth behind Deep Field in the tab.com.au Stakes at Flemington on November 1.
Charlie Boy was only 3.2 lengths behind Deep Field, Driefontein and In Cahoots, none of whom are engaged in the Heffernan.
“He’s about at this level, his past three runs have been good and he’s done well since his Flemington run,” Ryan said.
“I reckon if that horse from Mornington (Bel Sprinter) had not been on his outside he would have got outside Driefontein’s heels and I reckon he runs a clear third.”
Ryan noted the first four cleared out from the rest of the field and if any of the placegetters were engaged in the Heffernan they would be at the top of the betting market.
sportsbet.com.au rates Charlie Boy a $7 chance in its market which has Generalife a $4.20 favourite.
