Charlie retuns to scene of memorable success
CHARLIE BOY will take on the Group 3 BRC Sprint on Saturday – a race he is all too familiar with, as he scored a memorable success for Triple Crown in the race three years ago.
The son of Myboycharlie is chasing down the $1 Million mark in prizemoney after collecting a Group 2 and a pair of Group 3s in a glittering career that included a run in the Golden Slipper as a juvenile.
Now under the stewardship of Tony Gollan, the now seven-year-old won by a half-length from Rock Sturdy in the 2015 edition when trained by Peter & Paul Snowden, and has found a new lease of life since moving north, winning at Ipswich in September last year.
He arrives off the back of a solid third in the Listed Gold Coast Cup a fortnight ago, and Gollan said he’ll take improvements from that run.
“There are lots of pluses here for the horse,” said Gollan. “He’s come on really well since his run at the Gold Coast and each run this prep has seen him strip a fitter horse.
“I couldn’t be happier with him leading into this. He loves good ground, is back on his home track and should get a good run from barrier three.
“If he gets luck at the right time he’ll put in a really good performance.”
Brad Stewart will do the steering over the 1350m trip, in what would be a most popular victory if Charlie can reproduce his brilliance once again!
