GROUP 1 Success for Triple Crown & Peggy Jean on Day 1 of The Championships

Triple Crown’s Peggy Jean (Myboycharlie ex Lady of Love) became not only the first Group 1 winner for shuttle sire Myboycharlie, but created history winning the very first race conducted as part of The Championships when she took out the $1m Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Triple Crown connections of the 2YO Gerald Ryan trained filly were rewarded with a dominant win to claim the second leg of the illustrious 2YO triple crown, as they bypassed the Golden Slipper to give the filly two chances at Group 1 glory.

“I said to the Triple Crown boys she wasn’t a Golden Slipper filly, she was more a Sires’ – Champagne horse and we’ve just aimed her towards that”Ryan Said

“It’s a great thrill. When you sit back and set a horse for a race and it happens it gives you great satisfaction”

Peggy Jean impressed when storming home for second place in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill a fortnight ago, before being sent out the $3.80 equal favourite for the 2YO feature on Saturday. She was ridden superbly by top hoop Nash Rawiller, and making light work of the heavy ground she once again produced the devastating turn of foot previously seen in the Inglis Classic and Magic Night Stakes. Quickly catching the leader Scratch Me Lucky, the pair dusted the field with Cornrow another 5 ½ lengths in arrears. The nearly black filly overpowered the colt in the final 200m to win by three-quarters of a length.

“What a filly” Rawiller said “I rode her in a trial about three weeks ago and I came back to Gerald and said ‘if this isn’t a group 1 horse then I haven’t ridden one’ I was very impressed. This filly has class written all over her and she’s still on the way up.”

“She’s pretty special I reckon and just putting it together now, but she has Thousand Guineas filly written all over her in the spring”.

Ryan confirmed that Peggy Jean would contest the $400,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), the final leg of Sydney’s two-year-old triple crown, on April 26. A race he is confident she can conquer, before then eyeing off targets in the spring.

The daughter of Myboycharlie is expected to improve as she heads towards the Champagne Stakes and again into her three-year-old season.

Chris and Michael Ward of Triple Crown Syndications purchased Peggy Jean for only $46,000 when she was offered in the Torryburn Stud draft at the 2013 Inglis Classic Sale, and entrusted her to Ryan who was already experiencing great success with Triple Crown’s Group 2 Danehill Stakes winning son of Myboycharlie, Charlie Boy.

The filly has since collected almost $900,000 prizemoney, winning two and placing in three of her five career starts. To add to that, her residual value has also sky rocketed.

She was cheered home emphatically by her syndicate of Triple Crownowners, some of whom had flown in from Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia for the occasion.

Triple Crown connections celebrate Peggy Jean’s win

“It was an amazing day” commented Triple Crown Director Chris Ward.

“A lot of credit must go to John Messara and his team for creating The Championships concept and getting it off the ground, the show they put on was tremendous”.

“We have a great group of owners in this filly, everyone gets on so well and it makes it more special when you get to share the experience with a fantastic group of people.”

When speaking of the success Triple Crown has achieved in sourcing top quality racehorses at tremendous value Ward added “It’s not always about the most expensive horses, you do your homework, work really hard and you can take them on, it definitely makes it more rewarding and satisfying when you achieve the results.”

“For our owners to experience success at the highest level of racing from an affordable outlay really is the stuff dreams are made of!”
