Missile Mantra poised for Cockram return

Talented mare Missile Mantra will step out as a four-year-old for the first time when she resumes in Saturday’s Group 3 Cockram Stakes at Caulfield.

The daughter of Smart Missile is set to renew acquaintances with leading jockey Damien Lane, who last rode her competitively when beaten a nostril in last year’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas.

Having raced in Sydney last preparation, where she finished a close fifth in the Group 1 Surround Stakes, Missile Mantra made the trip down to Melbourne earlier this month and has settled back into the routine at Flemington with aplomb.

While she is bound to improve for the outing on Saturday, Missile Mantra was beaten less than two lengths into fifth on the same card last year when first-up in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes.

Her best form has come on good tracks, so all eyes will be on the weather for the remainder of this week in the hope that Caulfield continues to dry out.
