Charlie Boy’s close second to Famous Seamus in the Premiere Stakes last week convinced trainer Gerald Ryan the sprinter was ready to return to winning form.
So why not strike immediately with Ryan deciding to back up with Charlie Boy at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
“I reckon after his run last week he has come on from it,’’ Ryan said.
“He’s a gross ‘colt’ and it was only his second run back after a long spell.
“He had his chance to win but it was probably fitness that beat him — plus it took a good horse to run him down.’’
Charlie Boy has to start from the outside barrier in the 10-horse field but has superior tactical speed which should help to offset the awkward draw.
