What a wonderful opportunity! Not only is this colt an outstanding athlete, he hails from the first crop of a Japanese Horse of the Year in MAURICE, from a ½ sister to one of the world’s best sprinter/milers during the last decade in ABLE FRIEND.

First off though … ‘type’. Gee, this colt has a good walk on him: and so much presence. He caught our eye from the moment we first saw him and we are just so happy to have secured him.

There was a lot of talk too about his sire around the Gold Coast complex. We all know just what good horses come out of Japan: Lys Gracieux won last year’s Cox Plate, while Mer De Glace took out the Caulfield Cup. That said, plenty will line up to tell you that Maurice is the best they’ve seen in Japan.

Another huge factor in our decision to go after this colt though is the female side of his family. Quite apart from being out of a ½ sister to World Champion ABLE FRIEND, he really has a global pedigree with other close relations including South African Group 1 winner GLOBAL NEWS. Also on the page are Group 1 winning sprinters OVERREACH, REWARD FOR EFFORT and TURFFONTEIN, with the latter two going on to enjoy successful careers at stud.

Maurice is unquestionably one of the most exciting young sires in Australia!

Rated the best Japanese racehorse to ever stand at stud outside of Japan, this outstanding colt is from the first crop of Maurice in Australia.

In a remarkable racetrack career, Maurice was named Japan’s Horse of the Year and, importantly, also regarded as the country’s best sprinter AND No.1 miler.

A multiple winner and Group performed at 2, Maurice would go on to capture 3 Group 1s aged 4 and 5, including the Yasuda Kinen – consistently ranked among the world’s best mile contests.

Not only that, Maurice would travel to Hong Kong where he captured the international Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Mile, returning 6 months later to double his Group 1 tally overseas in the Hong Kong Champions Mile.

As a 5YO, Maurice would depart racing on a memorable high, winning the Group 1 Tokyo Tenno Sho on home turf before his swansong in Hong Kong, where he blew away a high-class field (by 3 lengths) in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup.

Ultimately, Maurice would be allotted a World Thoroughbred Ranking of 127 in 2016 – the 3rd highest turf horse on the planet.

Maurice is the best son of Roberto-line stallion Screen Hero, a winner of the Group 1 Japan Cup and from a daughter of Japan’s greatest ever stud influence, Sunday Silence.

The first thing that really stands out about this colt’s pedigree is that it works anywhere!

On the catalogue page alone you have a Horse of the Year in Hong Kong, Group 1 winner in South Africa, along with stakes winners in Australia and New Zealand, but the extended pedigree also reveals black type winners throughout Europe and South East Asia.

First up though, this colt is only the second foal of a half sister to Able Friend, one of the best racehorses in Hong Kong over the past decade. What a superstar … Horse of the Year and Champion Miler, Able Friend won 13 races including the Hong Kong Mile, Champions Mile, Stewards’ Cup, and Queen’s Silver Jubilee – all at a Group 1 level.

(Interestingly, Able Friend won the same Group 1s in Hong Kong as the colt’s sire, Maurice, and, indeed, finished third behind Maurice in the Hong Kong Mile!).

Ausbred Friend, meanwhile, is out of the stakes winner and multiple Group placed mare Ponte Piccolo, in turn a half sister to South Africa’s Group 1 hero and 4-time Group winner Global News (also bred in Australia).
